The type of curtain hanging plays an important role in choosing curtains: On the one hand, you need to consider whether your home already has hanging fixtures such as curtain tracks or rods. On the other hand, different hanging methods create different effects in the room. We'll explain the different types and what you need to consider.
What types of suspension systems are there?
The three most common suspension types are gliders, eyelets, and loops.
Glider
Curtain gliders, also called click gliders, are attached to the hem of the curtains. Depending on the system, they can be sewn permanently into the hem or simply hooked in. Afterward, the curtains can be quickly and easily threaded into the curtain track. It's important to pay attention to the correct size: there are two different options, depending on the width of your curtain tracks: Mini (3.6 to 4 mm) and Maxi (6.2 to 6.6 mm). Therefore, measure the width of your curtain track before ordering curtains.
Advantages of gliders:
- High design freedom: You can determine the spacing of the individual gliders yourself – and thus the shape and effect: The closer the individual curtain gliders are to each other, the more folds the curtain will have. We recommend a distance of 10 to 20 cm between the individual gliders. If you use gliders that are only hooked in and not sewn in place, you can also vary the spacing if desired.
- High blackout possible: At Vorhangschweiz you will soon be able to choose (planned for early 2024) whether the gliders should be attached in such a way that they leave a small gap or completely darken the room – depending on the room and purpose for which the curtains are used.
- Goes well with various fabrics
- Classic appearance
- The type of suspension is almost impossible to see.
- It can be moved easily.
- Multiple curtain tracks with curtains one behind the other are possible.
Disadvantages of gliders
- Only possible with curtain tracks
- It takes a little more time to adjust the wrinkles.
- Mounting the rail and threading the gliders are more time-consuming.
Recommendation:
Heavy curtains: For heavy fabrics such as velvet or blackout curtains, gliders are a good choice, as they make opening and closing easier and allow the curtains to glide smoothly over the track.
High ceilings and wide windows: Long tracks with gliders are the right choice, especially in rooms with high ceilings or wide windows. This allows curtains to be moved with minimal effort.
Curved or angled windows: In rooms with curved or angled windows, gliders are often the best solution, as they easily adapt to the shape of the track.
High-traffic areas: In areas where curtains are frequently opened and closed, such as living rooms or bedrooms, gliders offer a durable and efficient solution.
Multiple tracks: For double-track rail systems where several layers of curtains hang on top of each other, gliders are practical to allow each layer to be moved separately.

Loops
Loop curtains feature elegant loops sewn onto the fabric, allowing them to be quickly and easily slid onto any standard curtain rod. Their relaxed drape brings a touch of floating elegance to your room.
Advantages of loop curtains:
- Easy assembly of the curtain rod and hanging of the curtains
- Casual appearance
Disadvantages of loop curtains:
- Limited wrinkle adjustment
- It's a bit more cumbersome to move.
Recommendation:
When you order ready-made curtains with loops or custom-made curtains with loops from us, the curtains arrive already assembled; you simply need to thread them onto the curtain rod. We also recommend the following points:
Casual and cozy interiors: If you're decorating a room in a casual or cozy style, loop curtains are a perfect fit. Their simple, uncomplicated nature lends a relaxed atmosphere to any room.
Modern and minimalist decors: Loop curtains, with their clean design and straight lines, can harmonize very well in modern or minimalist interiors.
Rooms that are not frequently used: In rooms where curtains do not need to be moved daily, such as guest rooms or rarely used living areas, loop curtains are more advisable.
Children's room : Due to their ease of use, loop curtains are a good choice for children's room curtains . They are easy to hang and there is no risk of tangled cords. We also recommend loop curtains for children's rooms because they can be quickly changed as preferences change.
Windows with a beautiful view: If you have windows that are rarely covered but still need some decoration, loop curtains can be a subtle and stylish option without obstructing the view too much.
Easy to wash: They can be easily removed, washed and rehung, making them ideal for areas where regular cleaning is required.
Emphasizing room height: Since loop curtains hang directly on the rod, they can help increase the perceived height of a room, making them a good choice in rooms with lower ceilings.

eyelets
Eyelet curtains have metal rings sewn into the hem at regular intervals, ensuring a smooth drape and clean lines. The curtains can then be quickly and easily threaded onto the curtain rod. In terms of advantages and disadvantages, eyelet curtains are very similar to tab-top curtains. We've summarized the most important points for you:
Advantages of eyelets:
- Quick and easy installation
- Modern appearance
- Smooth wrinkling
- They can be easily moved
Disadvantages of eyelets:
- Less flexibility in pleat adjustment
Recommendation:
Suitable for modern and minimalist spaces such as bedrooms or offices. When you order ready-made eyelet curtains or custom-made eyelet curtains from us, they arrive fully assembled; all you have to do is thread them onto the curtain rod. We've compiled the most important recommendations for you below:
Modern and elegant spaces: Eyelet curtains are a perfect fit for modern and stylishly furnished rooms. The clean lines of the eyelets and the even drape of the fabric lend an elegant touch to any room.
Large and wide windows: Thanks to their simple sliding mechanism, eyelet curtains are ideal for large and wide windows. They are easy to open and close, making them suitable for living rooms, bedrooms, and other frequently used areas.
Heavier fabrics: Curtains with eyelets are well-suited for thicker and heavier fabrics. The eyelets provide sufficient support and allow the fabric to fold evenly, resulting in a pleasing appearance.
High ceilings: Since grommet curtains usually reach the floor and create a clear vertical line, they are particularly well-suited for rooms with high ceilings. They can help to visually lengthen the room and create an atmosphere of luxury and spaciousness.
Thermal and blackout curtains: Grommet curtains are often available as thermal or blackout curtains, making them ideal for bedrooms or rooms where light and temperature control are important.
Easy installation and operation: Eyelet curtains are easy to install, as they are simply threaded onto the curtain rod. Their operation is equally straightforward, making them a practical option for almost any home.

The special suspension type: Wave
Our made-to-measure curtains also feature the Wave hanging style. What's special about this style is that the curtain always forms consistent waves – whether it's open or gathered. The wave effect is created by special tapes attached to the back of the curtain. These tapes are mounted at regular intervals on a track that hangs horizontally above the window. When the curtains are drawn, the tapes form the characteristic waves that give the style its name.
When you order Wave curtains from us, we sew the Wave gliders directly into them.
Other curtain and hanging systems
- Tunnel drawstring: With a tunnel drawstring , the curtain is pushed directly onto the curtain rod, thus concealing the curtain rod.
- Bistro curtains: These curtains are particularly common in kitchens. They usually don't cover the entire window and are made of a light, decorative fabric. Thin curtain rods are attached to the window frame for hanging, and the curtains are threaded onto these rods either through integrated loops or small notches in the bistro curtain itself .
- Sliding curtains: Sliding curtains consist of smooth, stiff fabric panels that do not wrinkle and can be moved back and forth in the curtain track.
- Pleated blinds: Pleated blinds are attached directly to the window. They consist of folded fabric panels that can be gathered together to save space.
Conclusion
The choice of hanging method depends not only on pre-installed fixtures such as curtain tracks or rods, but also on your personal style, the room's use, and the desired ambiance. Whether you prefer traditional elegance, modern sophistication, or casual relaxation – each method has its own advantages.
