Curtains not only beautify rooms, but also set accents in the design of your own living space. If you have already chosen the perfect curtains, you may now be faced with the apparent challenge of installing the necessary curtain rails.

But don't worry, in this article we will not only show you what types of curtain rails there are, but also how you can easily install a curtain rail yourself step by step and what support we can offer you free of charge.

Choosing the perfect curtain track

Choosing the perfect curtain rail is a crucial point before you even start installing it. The selection criteria that play a key role in this are:

Window shape and size:
Determining the shape and size of your windows are of course the first and most important selection criteria before you can install your curtain rails. Because you need e.g. For example, for special window shapes such as bay windows or round arches, curved rails may be required to adjust the curtain perfectly

Number of runs required:
The question of the number of runs is closely linked to the intended use. Single-track curtain rails allow for different arrangement options than double-track curtain rails . For example, if you want to move all the curtains neatly to one side, you will need a rail with as many runs as there are curtains.

Curtain type:
Another aspect that you should consider well before installing the curtain rail is the type of curtain you want, because different types of curtains also place different requirements on a rail. To move your sliding curtains silently, you can attach a curtain rail that has an inner track.

What kind of curtain rails are there?

Before we delve into the details of installation, we should first take a look at the different types of curtain rails. Depending on your needs, furnishing style and type of window, there is a wide range of curtain rails. The most commonly used types of rails include curtain rails made of aluminum and curtain rails with a wooden gallery board . While metal rails are a popular choice for modern interiors, wooden rails are perfect for more traditional interiors, among other things.

In addition to a variety of other types of curtain rails, there are also:

  • Eyelet Curtain Tracks: Perfect for eyelet curtains and usually with extendable brackets
  • Extra long rails: Suitable for large windows or patio doors
  • Niche Window Rods: Used to hang curtain rails in tight areas
  • Curved rails: For architectural elements such as bay windows, round arches or gable windows

Each of these types of rails has its own advantages and properties and therefore has a significant influence on your purchasing decision.

Step 1: Measuring correctly is the be-all and end-all
An important first step when installing curtain tracks is to accurately measure the desired track width and curtain height. With these precise measurements you lay the foundation. In the simple case that you just want to replace your existing rail, simply measure the total length of the old pole without end pieces. This will give you the length of new pole you need.

If you want to install a new curtain rail, measure both the rail width, from where to where your curtains should hang, and the curtain height, measured from the bottom edge of the curtain rail to the desired end, according to the two graphics below.

Step 2: Materials and Tools
Make sure you have all the materials and tools you need on hand before you start assembling the curtain tracks. You usually need:

  • the curtain rails and associated brackets
  • a rolling tape measure
(or a laser measuring device )
  • a pencil
  • a spirit level
  • a drill
  • Drills and dowels (very important: to match the nature of the wall)
  • screws
  • a screwdriver
  • and of course the curtains you want to hang

Step 3: Make marks
Use the tape measure and pencil to mark the locations for the brackets on the wall. Make sure the marks on both sides of the window are symmetrical so the track will be level. Use the spirit level to make sure the marks are at the same height.

Step 4: Drill the holes
Now it's time to get down to business! Drill the necessary holes in the wall or ceiling and attach the curtain rails with the screws and dowels provided. Make sure that you use the correct size drill for your dowels and that it is suitable for the type of wall. If you are not sure whether there are electrical cables or pipes behind the wall, use a cable finder to be on the safe side

Step 5: Attach brackets
Attach the curtain track brackets to the wall by inserting the screws through the holes in the brackets into the wall anchors and tightening them with a screwdriver or cordless screwdriver. It is better to check more than once to ensure that the brackets are stable and secure.

Step 6: Install the curtain rails
Now push the curtain rails into the holders. There are usually recesses at the ends of the rail that snap into the brackets. Also check whether the rails are secure and straight and do not have much play left.

Step 7: Hang curtains
Once the rails are installed, you can easily hang your curtains. Depending on the type of curtains, you can do this in a variety of ways, such as hooking the curtains onto the track or attaching rings to the curtains that then slide onto the track.

Step 8: Check and adjust if necessary
Finally, make sure that the curtain rails are installed straight and stable and that the curtains slide and close easily. If you find that adjustments are necessary, correct the position of the curtain tracks accordingly.
