The type of hanging plays an important role in the choice of curtains: on the one hand, it is important to consider whether your home already has hanging devices such as curtain rails or curtain poles. On the other hand, the different types of hanging create a different effect in the room. We explain what types there are and what you need to look out for.
What types of hanging are there?
The three most common suspension types are gliders, eyelets and loops.
Glides
Curtain gliders, also known as clic gliders, are attached to the hem of the curtains. Depending on the system, they can be sewn into the hem or simply hooked in. The curtains can then be quickly and easily threaded into the curtain track. Make sure you choose the right size: There are two different options, depending on how wide your curtain tracks are: Mini (3.6 to 4 mm) and Maxi (6.2. to 6.6 mm). So before you order a curtain, measure the width of your curtain track.
Advantages of gliders:
- High design freedom: you can determine the spacing of the individual glides yourself - and therefore the shaping and effect: the closer the individual curtain glides are to each other, the more pleats the curtain will throw. We recommend a distance of 10 to 20 cm between the individual glides. If you use gliders that are only hooked in and not firmly sewn, you can vary the spacing again if you wish.
- High blackout possible: At Vorhangschweiz, you will soon be able to choose (planned for early 2024) whether the glides should be attached in such a way that they leave a small gap or darken completely - depending on the room and purpose for which the curtains are used.
- Goes well with different fabrics
- Classic appearance
- Suspension method is almost invisible
- Can be moved easily
- Several curtain tracks with curtains in a row possible
Disadvantages of gliders
- Only possible with curtain tracks
- Requires a little more time to adjust the pleats
- Mounting the track and threading the gliders is more time-consuming
Recommendation:
Heavy curtains: Glides are a good choice for heavy fabrics such as velvet or blackout curtains, as they make opening and closing easier and glide evenly over the track.
High ceilings and wide window fronts: Long tracks with glides are the right choice, especially helpful in rooms with high ceilings or wide window fronts. Curtains can thus be moved without great effort.
Curved or angled windows: Glides are often the best solution in rooms with curved or angled windows, as they adapt easily to the shape of the track.
High traffic areas: In areas where curtains are frequently opened and closed, such as living rooms or bedrooms, glides offer a durable and efficient solution.
Multiple tracks: For double track systems where multiple layers of curtains hang on top of each other, glides are handy for moving each layer separately.

Loops
With loop curtains, elegant loops are sewn onto the curtains, allowing the curtains to be quickly and easily slid onto any standard curtain rod. With their loose drape, they bring a floating elegance to your room.
Advantages of loop curtains:
- Easy installation of the curtain pole and attachment of the curtains
- Casual appearance
Disadvantages of loop curtains:
- Limited pleat adjustment
- Slightly more awkward to move
Recommendation:
If you order ready-made curtains with loops or made-to-measure curtains with loops from us, the loop curtains will arrive ready-made and all you have to do is thread them onto the curtain pole. We also recommend the following points:
Casual and cozy interiors:If you're designing a room in a casual or cozy style, loop curtains are a perfect fit. Their simple, uncomplicated nature lends a relaxed atmosphere to any room.
Modern and minimalist décor: In modern or minimalist interiors, loop curtains can harmonize very well with their clean design and straight lines.
Rooms that are not used frequently: Loop curtains are more recommended in rooms where curtains do not need to be moved on a daily basis, such as guest rooms or rarely used living areas.
Children's rooms: Loop curtains are a good choice for curtains in children's rooms due to their ease of use. They are easy to hang and there is no risk of tangled cords. We also recommend loop curtains for children's curtains, as they can be changed quickly due to changing preferences.
Windows with a beautiful view: If you have windows that are rarely covered but still need some decoration, loop curtains can be a subtle and stylish option without compromising the view too much.
Easy to wash: They can be easily removed, washed and re-hung, making them ideal for areas where regular cleaning is required.
Emphasize room height: Because loop curtains hang directly from the rod, they can help to increase the perceived height of a room, making them a good choice in rooms with lower ceilings.

Eyelets
With eyelet curtains, metal rings are sewn into the hem of the curtain at regular intervals and ensure an even drape and clear lines. The curtains can then be quickly and easily threaded onto the curtain pole. In terms of advantages and disadvantages, curtains with eyelets are very similar to loop curtains. We have summarized the most important points for you:
Advantages of eyelets:
- Quick and easy installation
- Modern appearance
- Smooth pleating
- Can be moved easily
Disadvantages of eyelets:
- Less flexibility in pleat adjustment
Recommendation:
Suitable for modern and minimalist rooms such as bedrooms or offices. If you order ready-made curtains with eyelets or made-to-measure curtains with eyelets from us, the eyelet curtains will arrive ready-made and all you have to do is thread them onto the curtain pole. We have compiled the most important recommendations for you below:
Modern and elegant rooms: Eyelet curtains fit perfectly in modern and stylishly furnished rooms. The clear lines of the eyelets and the even draping of the fabrics add an elegant touch to any room.
Large and wide window fronts: Due to their simple sliding mechanism, eyelet curtains are ideal for large and wide windows. They are easy to open and close, making them suitable for living room or bedroom curtains and other areas with frequent use.
Heavier fabrics: Curtains with eyelets are well suited for thicker and heavier fabrics. The eyelets provide enough support and allow the fabric to fold evenly for a beautiful look.
High ceilings: As eyelet curtains usually reach down to the floor and create a clear vertical line, they are particularly suitable in rooms with high ceilings. They can help to visually stretch the room and create an atmosphere of luxury and spaciousness.
Thermal and blackout curtains: Eyelet curtains are often available as thermal or blackout curtains, making them ideal for bedrooms or rooms where light and temperature control are important.
Easy to install and operate: Eyelet curtains are easy to install as they are drawn directly onto the curtain pole. Their operation is equally straightforward, making them a practical option for almost all households.

The special suspension method: Wave
Our made-to-measure curtains also include the wave hanging method. The special thing about this is that the curtain always casts uniform waves - regardless of whether it is spread out or pushed together. The waves are created by special tapes attached to the back of the curtain. These tapes are attached at regular intervals to a rail that is mounted horizontally above the window. When the curtains are drawn, the tapes form the characteristic waves that give the style its name.
When you order Wave curtains from us, we sew in the Wave gliders directly.
Other curtain and suspension types
- Drawstring: With drawstring curtains, the curtain is pushed directly onto the curtain pole, allowing the curtain pole to be concealed.
- Bistro curtains: These curtains are particularly often found in the kitchen: They usually do not cover the entire window and are made of a light, decorative fabric. To hang them, thin curtain rods are attached to the window frame, to which the curtains are threaded either via loops already integrated or small cut-outs in the bistro curtain.
- Sliding curtains: Sliding curtains consist of smooth, stiff fabric panels that do not crease and can be slid back and forth in the curtain track.
- Pleated blinds: Pleated blinds are attached directly to the window. They consist of folded fabric panels that can be pulled together to save space.
Conclusion
In addition to pre-installed devices such as curtain rails or curtain poles, the choice of hanging method depends on your personal style, the use of the room and the desired ambience. Whether traditional elegance, modern sophistication or casual relaxation - each method has its own advantages.
