Sleep like royalty, surrounded by soft, flowing fabric – a four-poster bed is the epitome of an elegant, fairytale-like, yet cozy and comfortable bed. This doesn't have to remain a dream: We'll show you how you can easily create your own four-poster bed with the right curtains.
Which curtain is suitable for a four-poster bed?
The curtains are the centerpiece of your four-poster bed. They give it a unique character. Whether light or dark, sheer or opaque, light or heavy: the material and color you choose for your four-poster bed curtains are entirely up to you. Consider: What style do I like? What fabrics do I prefer? What suits my bedroom, my decor, and my bedding?
There are three types of curtains:
- Day curtains: Day curtains are made of lightweight fabric and are often transparent or semi-transparent. A thin, slightly transparent, light-colored day curtain is frequently chosen for a four-poster bed, gently and softly framing the bed. Popular colors include white, beige, off-white, and ecru.
- Blackout curtains : Blackout curtains are opaque and lightproof, turning your four-poster bed into a cozy, well-shielded den.
- Night curtain : Night curtains fall somewhere between day curtains and blackout curtains: They allow light to pass through, but are not transparent.
You can find a huge selection of high-quality, carefully curated fabrics for day curtains, night curtains and blackout curtains in all colors and materials at Vorhangschweiz under curtain fabrics or the four-poster bed curtain category.
When it comes to materials, you can choose between natural, but somewhat more expensive, linen and cotton, and synthetic, and usually more affordable, blends and polyester – entirely according to your personal preference. The staff at Vorhangschweiz are happy to advise you on finding the perfect curtain fabric for your four-poster bed.
Things to consider when choosing a bed with a curtain
- Number: The number of curtains depends on the type of four-poster bed you envision. For a canopy bed, for example, you only need one curtain. For a four-poster bed with a frame, or for the version where the curtain is mounted to the ceiling, the number of curtains depends on how you want to drape them around the bed: Do you want curtains on all four sides of the bed, or just two? With a frame, should the curtains wrap around the corners, or would you prefer, for example, two separate curtains on each side?
- Measure the length : Ideally, the curtains should end a few centimeters above the floor, whether tied or open. This way, they look elegant without resting on the bed or the floor.
- Measure the width : Measure the rod, ring, or track to which the curtain will be attached. If you want the curtain to hang straight and taut, it's sufficient if the curtain is as wide as the rod or track. If you want the curtain to hang gathered, we recommend two to three times the fabric length. You can find measuring tips on our measuring guide page.
- Ordering curtains : Once you know the quantity, length, and width, you can order your curtains. Perhaps you'll find the perfect four-poster bed curtains directly at Vorhangschweiz? We'd also be happy to custom-make curtains for your four-poster bed to your exact specifications.
Mounting the curtain above the bed
The way you attach the curtain depends on what type of four-poster bed you prefer:
- Four-poster bed with frame: In the classic version, the bed is surrounded by a frame made of, for example, wood or metal. You can buy a ready-made four-poster bed or a suitable frame – or, if you enjoy crafting, make one yourself. The curtains are attached to the upper crossbars. Curtains with loops are suitable for this, or, for thinner frames, curtains with eyelets that you can simply thread onto the frame.
- Canopy bed suspended from the ceiling: With this option, you attach the curtains around the bed directly to the ceiling by installing curtain tracks or rods . If you choose curtain rods, curtains with loops are suitable; with tracks, choose curtains with gliders.
- Four-poster bed with a ring (canopy): If you opt for a canopy for the curtain above your bed, use a sturdy ring, for example made of metal, and attach it to the ceiling with cords or ribbons and a hook. It's important that you can open the ring so the curtain can be threaded onto it. Either a tab-top or eyelet curtain is suitable for this.

3 bonus tips for a particularly cozy four-poster bed
- Typically, the fabric of a four-poster bed is tied together at the corners with pretty ribbons. However, you can also use the curtains open – for example, to create a particularly cozy and peaceful oasis.
- Focus on lighting effects: Attach a string of lights with small or large bulbs to the inside or outside of the curtains.
- If you have a four-poster bed with a frame: Place a layer of curtain fabric on the frame for an extra cozy fabric canopy.
