Are you planning a move? If so, you're about to experience many exciting changes, but also a long list of things that need to be done. Besides the joy of a new home, moving also offers the perfect opportunity to decorate it exactly to your liking and unleash your creativity. And that's precisely where curtains and drapes come in.
To help you create a comfortable and personal atmosphere in your new apartment or house right from the start, we have compiled helpful checklists for moving, with a special section on "curtains and drapes".
Preparation is everything – our checklist for your move
Before you begin your move, it's always a good idea to create a detailed moving checklist. This checklist should cover not only aspects like transporting your furniture and personal belongings, but also the design of your new favorite rooms. And the selection of curtains and drapes plays a crucial role in creating a comfortable atmosphere, which we discuss in more detail in our special feature " Moving Checklist - Curtains & Drapes " ↓
Move into your new home in a structured way – our moving checklists to tick off.
We all know that moving house can be really stressful… But with the right planning, the dreaded moving chaos can be significantly minimized, if not completely prevented.
Our moving checklist helps you keep track of everything and ensures that you can focus on the important things – like settling into your new home.
- Preparation phase (approx. 2-3 months before the move)
- Set yourself a realistic moving date and start planning early.
- Close the new lease and terminate your old one in good time and within the required notice period.
- Create a budget plan for your move
- Sort out things you no longer need (take the opportunity to declutter)
- The intense planning phase (approximately 1-2 months before the move)
- Early deregistration from your previous municipality of residence – a personal visit to the residents' registration office may also be necessary.
- If applicable: Also deregister your dog with your old municipality.
- Inform the road traffic office (if changing cantons = office location in new canton of residence)
- If applicable: For school-age children, contact the teachers/school authorities
- Inform important institutions about your change of address (including employers and banks).
- Moving company or self-move: Decide whether you want to hire professionals or carry out the move using a rented van and friends/acquaintances.
- Final cleaning: Decide whether you want to do the final cleaning yourself or organize a cleaning company.
- If necessary, also request time off work for the moving day.
- Start by packing things you don't need every day.
- The packing marathon (the last weeks before the move)
- Obtain packing materials (e.g., cardboard boxes, tape, protective material for fragile items)
- Pack all your belongings systematically, ideally room by room.
- Label the boxes clearly and distinctly (so you can find everything quickly later).
- Make sure you have all important documents and formalities readily available (e.g., change of address with authorities, mail forwarding order, transfer of contracts for internet, electricity, etc.).
- The big moving day
- On moving day itself, you should get up as early as possible to have enough time.
- Make sure you and your helpers have enough food and drink.
- Make sure everyone involved knows what to do, when, and how.
- Take one last walk through your old premises to make sure you haven't forgotten anything.
- Perform a thorough final cleaning.
- Hand over the old apartment properly (e.g. keys, necessary documents)
- Settling into the new four walls
- First unpack the things you need immediately (bed linen, kitchen utensils, etc.).
- Take your time to arrange your furniture, decorations, and curtains in a meaningful way.
- Explore your new surroundings or greet your new neighbors
- Registration with the residents' registration office of the new municipality within 14 days
- If applicable: If you own a dog, please register it as well.
- AND VERY IMPORTANT: Celebrate your successful move with your loved ones or simply enjoy the quiet time to settle into your new surroundings.

An often overlooked yet important point before moving: Are your old curtains still move-ready?
Moving house is always the perfect opportunity to (re)consider your curtains and drapes. Often, during a move, we focus on packing furniture and organizing helpers, while our window and room decorations are easily overlooked. Yet curtains and drapes play a significant role in our living spaces and greatly influence the new, comfortable atmosphere.
Therefore, before you simply store your curtains and drapes in boxes, you should consider a few things.
Curtain Moving Checklist - Ask yourself these 3 questions beforehand
- ◄ 1. Do your old curtains match the new style of your future home?
- As mentioned, moving house offers a fantastic opportunity to redecorate your living space, and that includes updating your curtains and drapes in terms of color and pattern to match your new interior design style. Perhaps you've been dreaming of a bedroom with blackout curtains in the form of romantic, playful designs, or a modern living room with light, airy sheer curtains that let in plenty of light and create a bright, airy atmosphere? Now is the perfect time to change your curtains if your old ones no longer match your desired style or don't offer the desired features.
- ◄ 2. Are the existing curtains still in good condition?
- Over the years, curtains can accumulate dust and dirt, which is especially noticeable when you take them down and hang them up again. A thorough washing or cleaning of your curtains before moving can restore their shine, but this isn't always enough. Over time, stains may have formed on the curtains that can't be removed by simple cleaning, or small tears may have developed. In such cases, it's a great idea to treat yourself to new curtains or drapes when planning a move, giving your new home a fresh look right from the start – completely free of old problems like stains or tears.
- ◄ 3. Do the dimensions of the current curtains match the windows of the new premises?
- You should definitely make sure your curtains are the right length and width to fit your new windows. Nothing is more annoying than arriving at your new home to find that the curtains are either too short or too long. This should therefore be a must-have on your moving checklist. Start by carefully measuring the windows in your new rooms to ensure you choose the right curtains. By the way, on our measuring guide page, you'll find a helpful video that shows you how to correctly measure the track width and curtain height.

Inventory of existing curtains before the move
- Do the current curtains still match the desired interior design style of the new rooms and would they create the desired atmosphere in the new rooms?
- Are the existing curtains in good condition, or do they have tears, stains, or damage?
- Are the dimensions of the curtains sufficient in terms of width and length to cover the new windows?
- Do the current curtains still meet the requirements for light transmission, privacy, heat insulation and soundproofing for the new environment?
- Could I rework or redesign the old curtains and drapes to adapt them to the new rooms, or do I even want to go to that much trouble?
Option 1: Take existing curtains with you
- Wash all curtains and drapes before moving in – for a fresh and radiant look for your new home.
- Carefully wrap curtains and drapes in suitable packaging material, such as tissue paper or special curtain bags, to protect the curtain fabrics from creases.
Extra tip:
Make sure not to fold the curtains too tightly to prevent unsightly creases. - Store the curtains in sturdy cardboard boxes or storage containers that offer enough space to store the fabrics gently – be sure to label them.
Option 2: Use the restart to get new curtains.
